Creative like nothing else
This is a place for special occasions. It's just about the only restaurant where people still dress up for the experience. Ok, it's expensive (I paid 120 plus tip for 3, and it could have been more) but now that we have that out of the way let's talk about what makes it good. Or not.

The service is between good and great.

This place is not just a little noise, it's loud! Sound is not damped at all. If you're looking for an intimate dinner, go somewhere else. A person with a loud voice 3 tables away can seriously hinder your conversation.

But the food! That's really the only thing that counts. The items on the menu here are nothing like you've seen before. Example: some tuna sashimi dish where the fish was served on slices of apple, and crowned with bits of goat cheese. Together with some sauce this was an amazing combination. Or the "hot rock": you get a steaming hot rock, on which to sear some absolutely perfect slices of beef. Yum! The real sushi dishes were a bit of a disappointment by comparison: much more pedestrian.

This is really a place to be experienced. Btw, don't go there to "fill up", because you'll easily pay 20 bucks for a couple of bites. But the quality of those bites! - Victor , posted 05/28/07

Great food
It's a bit noisey in there, but that's like the only bad thing I can say about the place. Their stuffed avacado is mouthwateringly delicious, and every sushi order I've had or sampled has been top-notch. Sure it's a little pricey, but far cheaper then say a night at Trulucks or Eddie V's, definitely comparable to any other really good sushi place in town. If you don't like the "yuppy" or "trendy" crowd, just go a little earlier on a week night. The people I've met there, customers or staff, have always been very friendly and enjoyable. It's also not uncommon to recieve an unexpected treat now and then from the kitchen, truly a delight. - Demon Monk , posted 02/02/07

Love this place
Don't let anyone tell you not to go here ...go at least once and decide for yourself ..if you have the cash to burn ..for 100 bux you can do a pretty good dinner and walk away happy. Sometimes I eat there twice a week ..sometimes I don't go for a month or 2 ...but the food is rockin ..try the madai carapacio and the uchivichi ..Also, there is usually stuff not on the menu if you sit at the bar and ask the chefs...go an hour early ..there is a wait to get seated no matter what night you go. - Endorphin , posted 02/01/07

Trendy and Overpriced
I agree with the previous review. Very tasty, gorgeous presentation, insultingly overpriced. This place is all about self-congratulatory milking the hipster crowd. It's where you go to be seen, but not where you go to be satisfied. - Keith , posted 02/01/07

I wont be going back ...or $$$$$ for what?
The presentation is lovely, granted. The food is good, but the prices are foolish. I ordered something at $17.95, I expected an entree. i got 3 bites, very nicely presented, yes...but still 3 bites. What a burn.
They did agree to take that off the tab, but the experience wasnt worth the money, and the sense of entitlement that allows them to feel good about charging those kinds of prices just didnt sit well with me. Theres a place down So 1st, just north of Wm Cannon, that has equal quality sushi, prices much, much more reasonable, a spartan decor, true....but a much more pleasant experience. - donny , posted 01/31/07

The menu was nothing short of divine
I can think of nothing more pleasurable than consuming Uchi's fantastic fare. The various delicacies and their accompaniments danced on my tongue. Over and over again. The waitress's suggestions were spot-on. Pricey as hell but completely worth it for an experience to remember. - cara , posted 01/25/07

Amazing chefs, yuppy atmosphere
While the food was amazing, the service beyond excellent and the decor wonderful - I felt a little out of place among the young urban professionals. Didn't have an Austin feel but more of a large urban meat market. Props to the staff and the quality sashimi. - onlinePhoton , posted 01/25/07

The best sushi I have ever had. Artistic, original, delicious. Come to Austin just for Uchi, you won't be disappointed. - Marlo , posted 07/14/06
