Whale Rider
This movie was such a sleeper when it was first released. It won all kinds of awards, but the one that mattered the most was how it made every single women who watched her struggle with "traditionalism" feel. New Zealand is home to a burgeoning film industry of aboriginals. Luck and Prosperity to them all. The actress is due out in another film shortly. Keep your eyes peeled! - Jacqui , posted 07/28/08

a real blessing to watch
This is an amazing film...I cried several times in the theater, tears running down my cheeks. The girl is so so strong and brave when she gives her speach, so hurt that her grandfather is not there...but the viewer knows he is with the beached whales. It was a powerful irony. a great film for everyone. - Sarah , posted 10/08/07

Own it and Make Everyone I Know Watch it
I absolutely love this movie. There were not theaters within a reasonable distance showing it when it first came out so I had waited and waited until it was released on DVD. I was not disappointed. The actors did a fabulous job. The sets were done nicely. The music fit well. I really enjoyed watching the extras as well. - Mawgojzeta , posted 09/27/07

inspiring
A very good film indeed.

Keisha Castle-Hughes is a remarkable actor.

If you enjoyed this, You might also like The Bone People, a novel by Keri Hulme.
Although much darker than Whale Rider, Hulme's novel also deals with aspects of Maori culture and features a strong woman protagonist.

Gorgeous film, wonderful writing, a look into another culture. I thought the end was a total cop-out, though. - Reecy , posted 09/01/07

Whale Rider: Cultural & spiritual revolution
Wow

About bringing new to a culture that is not thriving, from New Zealand

Amazing

If you are like me, a woman who has had to be STRONG & FIGHT HARD for your place in this life, a place where men are suppose to be the strong, courageous ones & women are expected to come 2nd, I think you will like movie

Could be a retelling of the Christian Jesus story from a different culture
