First time I snuck into Ego's (underage) in 1988, there were still gentlemen wearing polyester jumpsuits with cokespoons dangling in their chesthair! This bar tucked away in a scenic underground parking garage is now a rite of passage for puveyors of absurd pathos! As a musician, I enjoy the cozy, windowless vibe of this "destination bar". The PA is serviceable and the clientele actually listens and dances to your offerings, which is far preferable to the musical wallpaper vibe. As a (very occasional) barfly, Ego's is one of those places I'd enjoy haunting even if it's just to trade banter with the local drunks. The TV's presence here is very limited, making it a great joint for conversation over a libation. A uniquely Austin class of losers and boozers constitute the regular happy hour cadre here. Add in the cute extras like fingerpainting, punk rock bbq, and the opportunity to flirt with adventurous souls, I encourage others to join in the adventure. I'd check out LoveJoy's (happy hour 6-8pm, great jukebox and their own beer, and free pool happy hour), Casino El' Camino's (punk juke with great goth decor), Emo's (famous punk rock venue) and Ego's (bowling alley bar feel with great bands & staff). - Atomic , posted 10/05/04 |
