not what i suspect it used to be
you always hear about the history this venue has, but i dont think it's special anymore. most of the acts are no-names and remain so for the rest of their careers. not to say that they dont get any talent, but it's usually not worth the cover - $15 and up for well known acts, $10 for your ave no-name singer-songwriter, $5 for a beer. this can mostly be attributed to the client base who is willing to pay for the venue, not the music - ave age was 35-45 everytime ive been. this is not a student hangout, and the prices are ensuring it will remain this way. and they're tap selection in worthless

on the positive side, the accoustics are great - Josh , posted 09/25/06

Best 'listening room' in town
I believe that the bartenders are so conscientious to the artist on-stage, that they silence the ice cubes as they put them into the drink glasses.

Always-intimate setting, typically excellent music. - Lee , posted 03/22/05

Stellar local acoustic showcase ...
You know this place is potent with Austin musical history before you even get inside: the posters of such luminaries as Lyle Lovett and Townes Van Zandt decorate the outside wall. Alison Krauss, T-Bone Burnett, Richard Thompson, the Dixie Chicks, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Ralph Stanley, Gillian Welch, and many, many more have played here in the past - and many great stars of the future will follow. The place sometimes kicks big-tikcket players upstairs to a more capacious arena. During the day, the Cactus plays cafeteria/coffeehouse to UT students. The bar staff is witty and appealing and the decor is intimate but not stuffy. A must for music fans and visitors to Austin alike, highly recommended. - Eric , posted 02/06/05
