Thursday nights in Austin have become the precursor to event-packed weekends as the city's music scene kicks into high gear during the busy Spring season. The work week is not yet over, but enough busy work has past that a pint is still in order. Before the Friday frenzy ensues, step into Sherlock's on Thursday, May 1st for a early night of live hip-hop, soul, and funk with Afrofreque, Austin's favorite groove junkies. Best of all, it's a free show.
Afrofreque, lead by MC Tigre Liu, mixes the style of 70s funk with conscious hip-hop lyrics and soulful melodies. Think P-funk and Prince meets the Roots with heaping helping of Austin soul. The Austin Chronicle called it when they quoted a track off the band's Fresh Soul Frequencies album in their recent album review: "People in the house everywhere, bobbin your head and shakin your derriere." Add a pint of beer or glass of wine and a comfortable booth with the ease of free parking and quick commute to the bar's north Austin location and you have an great occasion for a meet-up with friends or coworkers.
